Washington territory's sesquicentennial feted

More than two dozen organizations will come together at noon Sunday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Washington territory.

The event will be at the Temple of Justice on Capitol Campus and will last until 4 p.m.

The celebration is in conjunction with the annual Thurston County birthday celebration and is sponsored by the Thurston County Commissioners, the Thurston County Historic Commission, and the Territorial Sesquicentennial Commission.

Chief state Supreme Court Justice Gerry Alexander and Secretary of State Sam Reed will unveil a special Territorial Supreme Court exhibit beginning at 12:15 p.m.

The celebration also will include historical informational exhibits, as well as performances by the Timberline High School choir, the Lummi Tribal Dancers, and the Centennial Elementary School Choir. And Olympia, Tumwater and Thurston County will be recognized as founding territorial communities.

Admission is free, and all visitors will receive a special territorial seal and a piece of birthday cake.

Holocaust reconciliation project to meet at temple

Temple Beth Hatfiloh will host participants from the Compassionate Listening Jewish-German Reconciliation Project from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The project participants met last fall in Germany to explore the issues, feelings and legacy of the Holocaust.

The program will include a short presentation about the project, personal stories from participants, and facilitated group discussion.

The temple is at the corner of Eighth and Jefferson in Olympia. The event is open to the public.

Ash Wednesday service, vigil for peace scheduled

The St. Michael Social Justice Committee will have an Ash Wednesday service and peace vigil from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the corner of Union Avenue and Capitol Way in Olympia.

Members of the committee will read the Catholic Ash Wednesday Scripture readings, have a litany of repentance and prayer for peace, and distribute ashes. Then they will conduct the vigil for peace.

Parks program sponsors volunteer work party

The Olympia Volunteers in Parks program is sponsoring a volunteer work party at LBA Park from 9 a.m. to noon March 8.

The day's project will be to add wood chips to the jogging path.

Volunteers should meet at the picnic shelter at the end of Amhurst Drive off of Morse-Merryman Southeast. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes or boots. Those younger than 18 need a waiver signed by a parent; those under 14 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
