Saints top Western in softball

THE OLYMPIAN
RICHLAND -- The Saint Martin's softball team rallied to defeat Western Washington 6-5 at the Central Washington Invitational Tournament Friday in a season opening game.

The Vikings were ahead 5-0 after three innings, keyed by a three-run blast over the centerfield fence by Megan McPhee in the third inning.

But the Saints answered right back when Heather Kirshbaum drove in two runs on her double in the fourth. A throwing error by Western gave the Saints one more in the fifth, and Nicole Oberg drove in two more in the seventh on a bases-loaded single.

Western pitcher Kristen Kiekenapp had 13 strikeouts, including eight of the first 10 Saints she faced, in her complete-game effort.

Oberg, who came in to pitch relief in the fourth inning, retired the last 12 batters she faced.

In the Saints' next two games on Friday, they lost 8-0 against Humboldt State and had a 2-1 victory over Eastern Oregon. No other results were available.
