Yett helps Tumwater rout River Ridge

THE OLYMPIAN
LACEY -- Tumwater found some offense to go along with its stingy defense to blank River Ridge 6-0 on Thursday in girls Pacific-9 League soccer.

Tumwater, nearly equaling the number of goals it's scored all season, improved to 7-4-1. River Ridge dropped to 0-12.

"I thought we played extremely well offensively tonight," Tumwater coach Randy Leeper said. "We pushed the ball better. We were more offensive-minded."

Kelsey Yett scored three goals for Tumwater, which had scored eight goals in its previous 11 matches. Tumwater, getting two first-half goals by Yett, led 3-0 at halftime.

"I was extremely proud of Kelsey," Leeper said. "She's been working extremely hard."

It was Tumwater's sixth shutout of the season.

"We're still right in the thick of things," Leeper said. "This was a good push for the last four matches of the season."

WAUNCH KEYS WIN

Megan Waunch scored her 28th and 29th goals of the season, leading Black Hills to a 3-1 victory against Aberdeen, just two days after the Wolves lost their first game of the season.

Black Hills, losing 1-0 to Yelm on Tuesday, improved to 11-1-1 and remained in first place in the Pacific-9 League.

"On Wednesday we sat in room and talked about why we lost," Black Hills coach Lisa Summers said. "We talked about how we have four more games and we could choose to win or choose to lose."

Waunch's two goals gave the Wolves a 2-0 halftime lead.

Kelsey Lucas' goal gave Black Hills a 3-0 lead early in the second half.

"This was definitely a team effort," Summers said. "We rely on Megan, but you have to get the ball to her and you have to play tough defense."

CAPITAL CRUISES

Capital continued to power through the Narrows League, this time with a dominating 3-0 victory over Foss.

The Cougars are 4-0 in league play and 14-2 overall. Against Foss, Capital wasn't ever really threatened, winning 25-16, 25-13 and 25-6.

"It was one of those matches where the entire team got involved," Cougars coach Kirsten Rae said.

Leading the way was Tawni Drenon, who went 14 of 15 with five aces serving and added six digs. Kimber Simonetti led the Cougars in kills with seven.

All in all, it was a balanced attack, a fact that Rae was proud of.

"I was pleased with how the entire team played," she said. "We have a few new people that we brought up to varsity and they have stepped up. Our passing was exceptional tonight. When we pass as well as we did tonight, any team will be able to win."

HAWKS WIN AGAIN

River Ridge won its 11th straight match by blanking Yelm 3-0.

River Ridge, improving to 11-1, won 25-21, 25-10 and 25-14.

"They improved as the match went on," Hawks coach Latika Chandler said. "Their passing improved. That was the killer in the first game."

Andrea Light had 14 saves and Vivian lacy had 16 saves and was 18-for-18 serving with two aces.

WOLVES KEEP WINNING

Black Hills coach Kara Peterson encouraged her team to try something new in the Wolves' 3-0 win at Timberline.

"Our motto was try something new," Peterson said. "Take a risk. We had four girls try jump-serves for the first time. We showed some growth."

Black Hills, improving to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the Pacific-9 League, won 25-8, 25-19 and 25-7.

T-BIRDS BLANK ABERDEEN

Megan Serna had 16 assists and Kelsey French had 13 digs, helping Tumwater sweep Aberdeen 3-0.

Tumwater, beating Aberdeen for the second time this season, improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in Pacific-9 League.

"We haven't reached our potential," Tumwater coach Tana Croft said. "Aberdeen is a real scrappy team. They get a lot over the net and keep it in play."
