WSU's Coleman earns weekly defensive award

DALLAS -- Washington State's Erik Coleman is the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Cougars' 31-13 victory over UCLA on Saturday.

The 5-10, 205-pound senior free safety made 10 tackles (nine unassisted) and had a hand in four UCLA turnovers. He intercepted two passes and forced two fumbles. He also broke up a pass.

The Bruins committed seven turnovers and converted on third down only four times in 18 tries.

Roddick loses his cool but wins his match

HOUSTON -- Andy Roddick overcame a second-set tantrum with some spectacular serving and shotmaking to get past Carlos Moya 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 Tuesday night at the Tennis Masters Cup, improving his chances of finishing the year ranked No. 1.

"It's good to get through the first one with a win. It keeps it from being an uphill battle," Roddick said. "Especially with the race for No. 1 being so close, every match win is very big."

The result eliminated Wimbledon champ Roger Federer, currently No. 3, from contention for the top spot in the ATP Tour computer rankings. Roddick still has to worry, though, about No. 2 Juan Carlos Ferrero, the man he beat in the U.S. Open final.

Ferrero meets Andre Agassi today, while Federer plays David Nalbandian. Roddick's next match is Thursday against No. 6 Rainer Schuettler.

Sale of Dodgers unlikely to be voted on next week

LOS ANGELES -- The proposed sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers to real estate developer Frank McCourt probably won't be put on the agenda for next week's owners' meeting, a high-ranking baseball official said Tuesday.

The official, who spoke on the condition he not be identified, said that while there was an outside chance McCourt could complete paperwork in time for the Nov. 20 meeting in Chicago, it was unlikely.

Owners probably won't meet again until mid-January, but the official said that if the deal is ready for a vote before that time, commissioner Bud Selig could call for an earlier meeting or a vote by telephone conference call.
