Building damage

The Olympian

Wednesday's earthquake took its toll on a number of buildings around South Sound. Many have been closed until structural engineers can assess their stability.

Olympia closes 27 buildings

The city of Olympia has evacuated 13 buildings, closing them to everyone pending structural evaluations. They have been "red-tagged." No new buildings were tagged on Thursday.

- The Olympian Apartments, 519 Washington St.

- The Knox Building.

- 524 Washington St. (Drees Building).

- Safeway, 3215 Harrison Ave. N.W.

- The American Legion Building, 219 Legion St.

- 210 Thurston St.

- Mottman Building.

- Ramada Inn Governor House, 621 Capitol Way S.

- Capital High School's new section, 2707 Conger N.W.

- Skookum Bay Outfitters, 518 Capitol Way S.

Declared safe

- The James Dolliver Building, 801 Capitol Way

Yellow-tagged

The city also has limited access to the following buildings, "yellow-tagging" them for a structural assessment. They can only be entered to secure offices and obtain medicine.

- Elks Apartments, 611 Capitol Way S.

- Lincoln School's east wing, 213 21st Ave. S.E.

- The Olympia Center, 222 Columbia N.

- Security Building, 408 Washington St.

- South Bay Copying, 402 Washington St.

- 304 and 310 Olympia Ave.

- Olympia High School stage, 1302 North St. S.E.

- Ken Schoenfeld Furniture, West Fourth and South Capitol Way, near the alley

- Selden's Furnishings, 220 Legion Way S.E.

- Talcott Building, 420 Capitol Way S.

- Fish Tale Ale, 514 Jefferson St. S.E.

Declared safe

- Thompson Signs, 114 N. Capitol Way.

State buildings damaged

The following Capitol Campus and nearby buildings have been closed to the public until further notice while the Department of General Administration determines how safe and suitable they are for occupation:

- Legislative Building.

- O'Brien Building.

- Cherberg Building.

- Governor's Mansion.

- Temple of Justice.

- Insurance Building.

- Newhouse Building.

- Office Building 2.

- Department of Trans-portation headquarters.

- Highway-Licensing Building.

- General Administration headquarters.

- Employment Security headquarters and Employment Security annex.

- Dolliver Building.

- Pritchard library Building.

- State Archives.

- Natural Resources Building.

- The Superintendent of Public Instruction Building.

- Townsquare Buildings.

- Deschutes Parkway.

Emergency shelter

An emergency shelter for people evacuated or displaced by the earthquake at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1515 Harrison Ave., will remain open and reassessed on Saturday. For information about the shelter, call the local Red Cross chapter at 352-8575.

Transportation-travel

- Amtrak service between Portland and Vancouver, British Columbia, resumed operation Thursday.

- Sounder commuter trains between Tacoma and Seattle operating.

- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport reopened to limited traffic after a several-hour closure. All but one window broke in the control tower.
