Apply herbicides, fertilizers at proper time
Wait until late summer before applying herbicides and fertilizers to the lawn. Herbicides can injure grass when temperatures are above 85 degrees, says the Maryland Home & Garden Information Center. Fertilizing also can burn grass and is not recommended during the heat and stress of summer, when cool-season turf varieties may go dormant.
