Verne Huser's "River Running" has been an eye-opener for canoeists, kayakers and rafters. The guide has been rewritten and published in a second edition (Mountaineers, $18.95).
Rivers and attitudes about using them have shifted dramatically since the 1975 first edition, and the book reflects those changes.
At first glance, it looks like more than an occasional rafter would need, but there's enough information (see "swimming" and "getting stuck" entries) for the novice.
He provides information for paddling all levels of rivers, combining 21st-century river-running skills, history, planning and conservation.
