Coastal razor clam digging season set to begin again

OLYMPIA -- The next round of razor clam mania is set to start Thursday -- if the clams pass the latest marine toxin tests.

Resulta are due early in the week. Washington beaches are set to open for razor clam digging again from noon until midnight on the following days. Additional openings in 2002 will be announced in early January.

Razor clam season:

Dec. 13: Low tide at 5:27 p.m., minus 0.6 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks.

Dec. 14: Low tide at 6:13 p.m., minus 0.7 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks

Dec. 15: Low tide at 6:56 p.m., minus 0.7 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks, Kalaloch.

Dec. 30: Low tide at 6:40 p.m., minus 0.8 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks.

Dec. 31: Low tide at 7:24 p.m., minus 1.0 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks.

Jan. 1: Low tide at 8:09 p.m., minus 1.0 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks.

- LICENSES: Washington 2002-03 fishing, hunting, and other licenses are available from license vendors and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife offices across the state.

Current licenses are valid through March 31, 2002. New licenses, valid from April 1, 2002 through March 31, 2003, can be purchased as holiday gifts. If the recipient is currently licensed, only the name and birth date are required.

The rest of the required information already is in the computerized licensing system.

If the recipient doesn't have a license, the purchaser needs to have all of the required information -- address, phone, height, weight, eye color and social security number -- on hand at the time of the sale.

Names and locations of all license vendors are available by region from Fish and Wildlife.

Licenses can also be purchased with a credit card over the phone at 1-866-246-9453 or via the Internet at http://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/.

The rates for fishing and hunting licenses and access stewardship decals remain the same.

The license costs includes a 9.5 percent transaction fee to cover the cost of the computerized system.

A resident freshwater fishing license is $21.90, saltwater is $19.71, shellfish/seaweed is $7.67, and a combination license is $39.42.

Costs for a resident adult hunting licenses vary from $32.85 for a small game license alone to $72.27 for a deer-elk-cougar-bear combination.

Access stewardship decals, required to use Fish and Wildlife water access sites and wildlife areas, come with fishing and hunting licenses, or can be bought for people who don't hunt or fish.
