OLYMPIA -- Rudy Smith and Craig Taylor continue to battle for top honors in the Capital City Bass Club's Angler of the Year race.
Taylor grabbed the lead by six points over Smith with his team's win at the Duck Lake tournament.
Taylor and John Semken teamed up to win at Duck by landing two limits of bass weighing a total of 20 pounds, 14 ounces.
The lead was short-lived as Rudy Smith won the Banks Lake tournament Aug. 19 with a limit totaling 17 pounds, 13 ounces. Smith regained the Angler of the Year lead by 131 points, with only one tournament left to go this season.
The Riffe Lake tournament on Sept. 22-23 has been changed to Silver Lake in Cowlitz County.
For more information about the change, call tournament director Bryan Taylor at 360-943-2671.
- VISIT PARKS FREE: Anyone who has been hankering to pay a visit to the area's national parks, but reluctant to pay the fee before they see what there is to see, now has a chance to do just that Saturday.
The National Park Service is throwing open the doors to all national parks in celebration of its 85th anniversary and will waive entrance fees for all visitors on Founders' Day, Saturday. The park service was established Aug. 25, 1916.
"We extend a warm welcome to all our park neighbors and out-of-town visitors," said David Morris, superintendent of the Olympic National Park.
All other fees, including campground and wilderness fees, will remain in effect.
- VOLCANO SEMINAR: A seminar and guided walk Saturday will cover the production of carbon dioxide, an important greenhouse gas, by volcanoes.
U.S. Geological Survey geochemist Terry Gerlach will explain volcanoes' contribution during a seminar at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Johnston Ridge Observatory at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
Human activity adds much more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere than all the worlds volcanoes, scientists say.
A two-hour guided walk, following the seminar, will explore the debris avalanche on the 2.3-mile Hummocks Trail loop.
Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children five to 15, and free for children under four.
