Hurricane Ridge

- To get there: From Olympia go north on U.S. Highway 101 along Hood Canal -- this part of the drive alone is worth the trip -- past Sequim to Port Angeles. Turn south (left) on Race Street, at signs to Olympic National Park. Road climbs about 18 miles to visitor center. Park charges entrance fee. For information, call 360-565-3132.

Hiking trails

Several easy, short loop trails start at Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. Longer trails include:

- Klahane Ridge: Almost 4 miles with 1 mile of steep, strenuous switchbacks.

- Hurricane Hill: Strenuous 3-mile round trip climbs 700 feet to a panoramic view of the mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

- Wolf Creek: Descends 8 miles to Whiskey Bend in the Elwha Valley, moderately strenuous return.

- Little River: Descends 8 miles to Little River Road, strenuous return.

- Camping: Heart O' the Hills campground, with 105 campsites, is just inside park entrance on road to Hurricane Ridge.

- Facilities: Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center includes decent snack bar with cold and hot food and drink. Many other restaurants and overnight accommodations are available in Port Angeles.
