Tired of running in circles? Go off-road.
Joggers who have tired of the scenery on the same old neighborhood circuits can try a cross-country workout called trail running.
It ups the pace and the heartbeat rate from a regular hike. Read where to dash in "Trail Running Guide to Western Washington: Over 50 Great Trail Runs," by Mike McQuaide (Sasquatch Books, Seattle, $16.95).
In addition to topographic maps and trail descriptions, the Bellingham writer rates the runs by pain (difficulty) and gain (appeal).
The trails also are good for regular hikers.
