Modest Mouse's new release is loyal to indie roots

The three new tracks suggest that Modest Mouse is probably one of the weirdest, most noncommercial acts currently on Epic Records' roster.

Life as employees of one of the world's largest corporations hasn't stopped the indie ways of Modest Mouse.

The Issaquah trio has yet another new record in the stores, the band's fourth in less than two years.

The eight-song "Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks" collects four hard-to-find previously released tracks, a new remix and three fresh songs.

"Willful Suspension of Disbelief," "Night on the Sun," "I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock)" and "You're the Good Things" first appeared on last year's "Night on the Sun," a vinyl-only and now out-of-print Up Records release. The songs are outtakes from the sessions that produced Modest Mouse's 2000 Epic Records debut, "The Moon & Antarctica." They sound as good -- if not better -- than what ultimately ended up on the album.

"The Air," meanwhile, is somewhat of a departure for Modest Mouse. It's an ambient remix that draws from several "Moon & Antarctica" tracks, courtesy of producer Brian Deck (who also worked on ex-Spinanes leader Rebecca Gates' excellent new "Ruby Series" disc).

And if nothing else, the three new tracks -- "Here it Comes," "So Much Beauty in Dirt" and "Three Inch Horses, Two Faced Monsters" -- suggest that Modest Mouse is probably one of the weirdest, most noncommercial acts currently on Epic Records' roster.

In other Modest Mouse news, K Records has finally released a vinyl version of the band's "Sad, Sappy Sucker." K put out the CD version of "Sad, Sappy Sucker" back in April. Mostly recorded in 1994 by K's Calvin Johnson, it collects Modest Mouse's earliest work.

Meanwhile, Modest Mouse vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock is readying a solo record (under the name Ugly Cassanova) for release on Sub Pop at some point in the first half of next year. The label also says Brock is set to play a pair of shows at Seattle's Graceland on Nov. 17 and 18.

Microphones

Also new to record stores is the Microphones' third full-length album for K Records, "The Glow, Pt. 2."

A loose collective of musicians centered around Anacortes native Phil Elvrum, the Microphones earned comparisons to "Pet Sounds"-era Beach Boys on last year's excellent "It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water." Elvrum, who has played with K bands D+ and Old Time Relijun, will spend October touring the country.

To celebrate the new album, K Records' Web site -- www.kpunk.com -- is running a special Microphones deal. They're offering "The Glow, Pt. 2" plus one of the previous Microphones discs for a total of $20, or all three of the band's albums for $30. All of the orders come with a free Microphones button designed by Elvrum.

KISS this

I think every fan of rock music owes it to themselves to see a KISS cover band tear up a nightclub at least once in their life.

I've more than fulfilled that quotient, as I've caught two such groups -- Hotter than Hell and Strutter -- as well as the genuine article, twice.

Those who have yet to experience the oddly appealing experience of watching four sweaty, makeup-smeared young men in dragon boots and leather play decades-old songs will have the chance when Shout it Out Loud hits downtown Olympia. They'll perform with opening act Shadow of a Doubt at 9 p.m. Saturday at The GO Club, 311 Fourth Ave. E. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

In other GO news, the bar recently began serving liquor as well as wine and beer, which means the cold gin should be flowing Saturday night.

The Mudbay Jugband

If you've lived in Olympia for any length of time, chances are you've run into the Wayward Members of the Mudbay Jugband somewhere: Super Saturday, Celebrate Olympia, Arts Walk, Lakefair, Love Day ... (I may have made that last one up).

Anyway, the duo of Dirk Ronneburg and Scott "Skuff" Acuff will employ a wide range of instruments -- guitar, mandolin, harmonica, washtub bass, kazoo, banjo, tambourine and, of course, the jug -- when they play two CD-release shows in Olympia this weekend. They stop at Burrito Heaven's Tequila Bar at 9 p.m. today and Clancy's Columbia Street Public House at 9 p.m. Saturday.

The Top 10

This week's Top 10 list comes directly from my CD player. It's a pretty simple inventory of what I've been spinning over the past few weeks. (Readers who have their own music-related Top 10 lists are invited to e-mail them to the address below.)
