A look at Illuminet

THE OLYMPIAN

Originally published August 12, 2001

Where they've been

Illuminet was created in 1996 through the merger of Independent Telecommunications Network and US Intelco Networks.

Intelco was started in 1981 and was preceded by Allied Data, which was started in the late 1960s by independent Northwest phone carriers hoping to share the cost of a computer.

ITN was formed in 1988.

Roger Moore was hired in 1995. In 1996, the two companies became Illuminet, which went public in October 1999.

In July 2000, Illuminet acquired National Telemanagement Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary.

Where they are

Illuminet Holdings Inc. is based in Lacey, where it employs about 200 people. As of June 30, there were 493 employees companywide.

Where they're going

In November 2002, wireless phone numbers will become portable, as wire-based lines are today. This could be a further boost to Illuminet's revenue.

Illuminet has $123 million in cash or cash equivalents and is actively, but conservatively, looking for possible acquisitions.
