Remembering and rebuilding
Earthquake took its toll, but lessons have been learned

About quakes
What's going on down there?
  • Deep earthquakes
Deep earthquakes like last year's Nisqually quake are caused by faults in the Juan de Fuca plate as it is forced under the North American plate.

  • Shallow earthquakes
Shallow quakes occur less than 15 miles down and are caused by faults in the North American plate.

  • Collecting data
The Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network at the University of Washington collects and relays information about the earth's movements at stations across the Northwest.
