Olympia Film Society wants you to be the judge at annual Oscar Bash

OLYMPIA -- Film buffs who never agree with the winners of the Academy Awards are in luck.

The Olympia Film Society will host its annual "OFS Oscar Bash" at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. S.E., Olympia.

"It's fun, it's informal and people can submit their own Oscar nominations," said Linda Friedman, OFS office manager.

The event, which was not held last year due to the Capitol Theater's earthquake repairs, features the Academy Awards projected live onto the theater's silver screen.

Ballots available at the door allow the audience to vote in various Oscar categories, with local "winners" announced during commercial breaks.

"It's just one way not to take the Oscars too seriously," said Sean Savage, OFS program director. "No real justice can be done in any awards ceremony, so we just try to have fun with it."

In conjunction with the event, OFS will screen "The Player" at 2 and 9:30 p.m. The 1992 Hollywood satire was directed by Robert Altman, who is nominated this year for "Gosford Park."

As is often the case with OFS parties, evening gowns and tuxedos are encouraged, but hardly required.

"Oh, definitely, some people do get all glitzed out," said Savage. "But I want people to be as comfortable watching the Oscars in the theater as they would be at home."
