Q: I am in the process of removing the floor tile in the basement. Some of it has already come up without doing anything to it. The house is 45 years old, and the tile looks original. I plan to carpet some of it, retile some, and paint or stain some. My question is, the glue used is a black-tar type, and there is still some of it sticking to the concrete floor. Do you suggest that it should be removed before tile, paint or carpet is installed. And how would I go about it?
A: Bio-Wash Foam Off Glue Remover, 800-663-9274, was made for this job. Citra-Solv Concentrate, 800-343-6588, can be used to take every ounce of it away. Usually you don't have to be that thorough. Many professionals at tile stores say you are golden if 75 percent to 80 percent is removed. Check with your tile store to hear their recommendations. Any concrete that is going to be painted or stained has to be squeaky clean.
