Ishii makes debut for Dodgers

Kazuhisa Ishii struck out four in two scoreless innings in his U.S. debut as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Friday.

Ishii needed only 30 pitches to pitch the two innings at Vero Beach, Fla., working in sliders and splitters with his fastball. He allowed just one hit and no walks.

Julio Franco's single in the first was the only hit allowed by Ishii, who came to the Dodgers from Japan's Yakult Swallows.

Brian Jordan and Eric Karros hit RBI singles in the first off Tom Glavine.

MARINERS 13, GIANTS 8

At Scottsdale, Ariz., Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki took his lead off second base and playfully pointed at the Giants' Tsuyoshi Shinjo in center field.

Pitcher Paul Abbott hit his first home run since high school, a three-run shot off shaky Livan Hernandez.

PIRATES 3, YANKEES 2

At Bradenton, Fla., New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte skipped his exhibition start against Pittsburgh after feeling tightness in his elbow while warming up.

MARLINS 3, EXPOS 2

At Melbourne, Fla., Javier Vazquez made his second start since a pitch by Florida's Ryan Dempster last September broke bones in his left eye socket and allowed two runs and four hits in four innings.

TIGERS 2, INDIANS 0

At Lakeland, Fla., Robert Fick hit his second homer of the spring and six Detroit pitchers combined on a four-hitter.

RANGERS 9, DEVIL RAYS 3

At St. Petersburg, Fla., Nick Bierbrodt walked seven, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded -- all in the second inning. Ivan Rodriguez and Rafael Palmeiro finished the seven-run second with RBI singles off Ryan Rupe.

ORIOLES 5, METS 1

At Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jose Leon homered and scored twice. Steve Trachsel allowed three runs -- two earned -- four hits and a walk in three innings.

ASTROS 11, ROYALS 0

At Haines City, Fla., Jeff Bagwell hit a three-run homer in the first off Chris George, rookie Keith Ginter hit a grand slam off Jordan Zimmerman in a six-run eighth, and Tripp Cromer and Alan Zinter added homers.

TWINS 6, CARDINALS 2

At Jupiter, Fla., So Taguchi got his first hits of the spring, snapping an 0-for-14 slump that featured mostly weak groundouts.

PHILLIES 9, BLUE JAYS 8

At Clearwater, Fla., Scott Rolen homered and drove in four runs as Philadelphia rallied from a 7-0 deficit.

ROCKIES 14, ANGELS (SS) 1

At Tucson, Ariz., Shawn Chacon rebounded from a shaky first start with three shutout innings. Colorado had 23 hits, including nine doubles.

Todd Helton was 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Benny Agbayani was also 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

ANGELS (SS) 8, PADRES 6

At Peoria, Ariz., Troy Glaus hit a three-run homer off Brian Tollberg in a six-run fourth inning. Angels right fielder Tim Salmon because of a stiff back after grounding out in the first.

BREWERS (SS) 5, ATHLETICS 2

At Phoenix, Ben Sheets allowed five hits in three shutout innings and Gabe Alvarez hit a home run and drove in three runs. Tim Hudson made his spring debut with two scoreless innings.

WHITE SOX 8, CUBS (SS) 7

At Tucson, rookie Willie Harris hit a three-run homer in the eighth. Mark Bellhorn went 3-for-5 for the Cubs, and Carlos Lee was 3-for-3 for the White Sox.
