PARK SERVICE WANTS PUBLIC COMMENT

Anyone interested in how Mount Rainier National Park manages its commercial partnerships will have a chance to comment.

The park is developing a commercial services plan. Services including climbing and wilderness guides, lodging, food service, gift shops, firewood sales and shuttle services will be considered in the plan.

Officials plan a public hearing from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 25 at Columbia Crest Elementary School in Ashford. Meetings also are set for Tacoma, Seattle and Yakima.

Written comments may be sent to: Superintendent Jon Jarvis, Mount Rainier National Park, Star Route, Ashford, WA 98304-9751.

For more information, call 360-569-2211, Ext. 2300.

Books

Hike lost trails, such as the historic Marten Creek Trail in the Darrington Ranger District, or routes beaten in by climbers and scramblers, such as The Brothers in the Olympics.

In "Hidden Hikes in Western Washington" ($16.95, Mountaineers Books), Karen Sykes reveals the challenges of hidden hikes.

In its 256 pages, with 60 black-and-white photos and 46 maps, this book includes trails not described in any other guidebook, including lost miner's trails, abandoned Forest Service trails and old roads.

It is for seasoned hikers who enjoy discovering and exploring lesser-known trails and includes history, length, elevation gain and level of difficulty.
