OLYMPIA -- A five-day razor clam dig set to start today has been approved by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife after test results showed the clams are safe to eat.
The late March razor clam dig will run from noon today through noon Sunday, starting with evening tides during the weekdays, then switching to morning tides Saturday and Sunday.
Long Beach will be open for digging all five days, but the four other razor clam beaches -- Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks and Kalaloch -- will be closed for one or more of those days according to the following schedule:
- Wednesday: All beaches open except Copalis and Kalaloch. Low tide is at 5:50 p.m.
- Thursday: All beaches open except Copalis and Kalaloch. Low tide is at 6:40 p.m.
- Friday: All beaches open except Kalaloch and low tide is at 7:18 p.m.
- Saturday: All beaches open and low tide is at 7:50 a.m.
- Sunday: Long Beach and Kalaloch only. Low tide is at 8:37 a.m.
A second clam dig, still contingent on the results of marine toxin tests, is set to run for six days, from April 12 through 17, at all five beaches.
That dig will be restricted to morning tides and will close at noon each day.
Clam diggers must have a valid license, and the limit is the first 15 clams dug.
From April 12 through April 17, all five razor clam beaches will be open during morning tides only.
