Poster contest for workers' relatives

The children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other young relatives of state workers can participate in the Public Service Recognition Week poster contest.

The theme: "I'm Proud of My State."

There will be first-, second- and third-place honorees in the following categories: preschool to kindergarten; grades one and two; grades three and four; grades five and six; grades seven and eight; grades nine and 10; and grades 11 and 12.

Winning posters will be displayed at the Secretary of State's Office from April 12 through May 3, and on May 8 during the Public Service Recognition Week celebration.

Deadline for submitting posters is April 5. For information, contact Jody Houser at the Department of Natural Resources at 360-902-1134.

Two honored with Brainstorm Awards

The state Productivity Board has awarded Brainstorm Awards to two state employees.

Donald Brouillard of the Department of Transportation was recognized for his proposal that the DOT's Materials Laboratory in Tumwater use Pacific Disposal's recycling program to dispose of concrete, aggregate and asphalt concrete, rather than hauling the waste material to the Lacey landfill.

DOT found it was less expensive to recycle the materials than to haul them away as garbage.

Loren Gomez of the Department of Social and Health Services received an award for his suggestion to enter new Division of Developmental Disabilities clients' names into a database.

That database will allow employees to quickly determine whether those clients are also eligible for Social Security benefits.

GA Web site gives travel information

The Department of General Administration offers state employees a Web site that's full of travel information, tips, links and answers to frequently asked questions.

The site includes state contacts for travel, including airfares, travel agents, vehicle rentals, travel charge cards and the state lodging survey.

The site can be found at www.ga.wa.gov/pca/travel.

Softball league signups under way

Signups for state employee softball leagues are under way. The league is open to state workers and members of their immediate family.

League play starts April 22, and the deadline for signing up is March 25. The league size is limited. The registration fee is $545.

For more information, contact Lawrence Cade at the Health Care Authority at 360-923-2796.
