Bizarre motive alleged in blasts
RENO, Nev. -- The 21-year-old college art student accused of putting pipe bombs in mailboxes in five states told authorities he was trying to make a "smiley face" pattern on the map, a sheriff said Thursday.


3 mailbox bombs hit near Spokane
SPOKANE -- At least three small bombs made with drain cleaner exploded in mailboxes in northern parts of Spokane County this week, the U.S. Postal Service said Thursday.


Gaza on edge; Bethlehem standoff ends
JERUSALEM -- Tanks were poised outside the Gaza Strip, and Israel called up military reservists Thursday ahead of an expected attack, even as the standoff at Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity came to an end.


Hundreds arrested in Pakistan after bombing
KARACHI, Pakistan -- In a sweep against Islamic militants Thursday, Pakistani authorities rounded up nearly 300 suspects while U.S. and French investigators searched for links between al-Qaida members and a suicide bombing that killed 14 people, including 11 French engineers.


CIA missile misses warlord
The CIA fired a missile from an unmanned Predator aircraft over Afghanistan on Monday in an attempt to kill a warlord who has vowed to attack U.S. service personnel and oust the interim Afghan government of Hamid Karzai, according to administration sources.


House passes largest defense budget boost in decades
WASHINGTON -- The House passed the biggest increase in military spending in decades early this morning. The new defense budget includes $11 billion for a new mobile artillery cannon the Pentagon doesn't want.


House panel votes to bar U.S from war crimes tribunal
WASHINGTON -- A House panel voted Thursday to bar U.S. cooperation with the new international war crimes tribunal, heeding critics of the court who said it would imperil American troops.
