Plans will continue to evolve and more events might be added this year.
As of late December, plans for the celebration included:
- Available now -- 2002 calendars featuring historic photos of Thurston County people and places. Special dates and event plans are marked on the calendar. They are available for $9.95 from The Olympian. Call 360-754-5400.
- Jan. 12 -- County birthday party in the state Capitol Rotunda, from noon to 4 p.m. Expected to attend are descendants of Samuel Thurston; county pioneers including Michael T. Simmons and Daniel Bigelow; and first county commissioners Arthur Denny, David Shelton and Sidney Ford.
- Jan. 22 -- Sesquicentennial speaker series begins at 7 p.m., State Capitol Museum Coach House, 211 West 21st St. in Olympia, "Sam Thurston and the Beginnings of Thurston County," by Shanna Stevenson.
- Feb. 9 -- Family history workshop, 10 a.m. to noon, Washington State Archives, 1129 Washington St. S.E. Limited to 25 people. Register by calling 786-5222 or sending e-mail to stevens@co.thurston.wa.us.
- Feb. 5 -- Sesquicentennial speaker, 7 p.m., Coach House, "George Bush and the Bush Family Legacy," by Winnifred Olsen.
- March 1 -- Thurston County history video available.
- March 5 -- Sesquicentennial speaker, 7 p.m., Coach House, "The Troublesome Oregon Trail," by David Nicandri.
- March 9 -- Family history day workshop, Washington State Archives, 10 a.m. to noon. Register by calling 786-5222 or sending e-mail to stevens@co.thurston.wa.us.
- April 2 -- Sesquicentennial speaker, 7 p.m. Coach House, "The Hudson's Bay Company in Thurston County: A Forgotten Legacy," by Drew Cooks.
- June 4 -- Sesquicentennial speaker, 7 p.m. Coach House, "Thurston County Cemeteries and Tour of the Masonic Cemetery," by Linda Howerton.
- Summer and fall 2002 -- History exhibits at the State Capitol Museum.
- Throughout 2002 -- Thurstoneer certificates for people who can document their ancestors were within the county's current boundaries by 1852 or 1902. Call Shanna Stevenson at 360-786-5222.
In addition to the events with set dates, an artifact display has been created that will be shown at children's events, and other activities and events might be added throughout the year.
