Black Hills girl wins varsity match

THE OLYMPIAN

TUMWATER -- Ginelle Marquez highlighted a 48-36 non-league wrestling win for Black Hills on Monday, winning by fall in the varsity 135-pound match.

All eight matches wrestled ended with pins. The other six were forfeited.

Marquez -- a senior in her third wrestling season with the Wolves -- pinned Montesano's Brandon Smith late in the first round at 135 pounds. It was her second career victory and first pin.

Marquez and younger sister Jenny both wrestle for Black Hills.

"She got the head-and-arm and muscled him over," Black Hills assistant Dave Haynie said. "He turned her over; she posted. Every time he rolled, she posted and back they came.

"We talked her into walking around the head and she had it tight. She walked around and both shoulders hit."

WOLVES STAY IN FIRST

Black Hills made a dramatic improvement over the first time it faced Centralia, whipping the Tigers 61-40 in Centralia.

The Wolves committed 38 turnovers in defeating the quicker Tigers only 50-40 at home in December.

"We felt their quickness could cause a problem for us," Black Hills coach Paul Dretsch said. "We had a little trouble with their press in the first quarter, then our kids settled down."

Ahead only 14-12 after that first quarter, Black Hills pulled steadily away after that and finished the game with a season-low 14 turnovers.

"We stepped up and were stronger with the ball," Dretsch said. "Defensively we were so much more focused, and we stayed out of foul trouble."

Sheena Prante scored 17 points, Kyle Haag had 14 and Brianne Adderley added 13 as the Wolves improved to 9-1, a game ahead of Timberline for first place in the Pacific-9 League.

BLAZERS KEEP ROLLING

Ashley Bland and Sarah Yelenich combined for 44 points, leading Timberline to a 77-55 victory against Yelm and improving the Blazers' record to 9-3 overall and 8-2 in Pacific-9 League, their best-ever start.

After taking a 45-39 halftime lead, Timberline held Yelm to 16 points in the second half.

"The first half was a track meet," Blazers coach Dena Niles said. "It was back and forth. We scored 45 in the first half and they weren't slacking off at all."

Timberline forced Yelm into more of a halfcourt game in the second quarter.

"They had a hard time running their half-court offense," Niles said. "But they were good on the fast break. Their fast break kept them in it in the first half."

Bland scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the first half. Yelenich scored 19 of her 21 points in the first half. It was her fourth 20-plus point game of the season.

Bland had 10 rebounds and seven steals. Krystle Jones added 10 points and nine rebounds for Timberline. Jamie Evans led Yelm with 14 points.

BOBCATS NIP TUMWATER

A young Tumwater team dropped another close game, losing 40-38 to Aberdeen after taking a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Aberdeen outscored the Thunderbirds 9-2 in the second quarter and led 19-16 at halftime and 26-23 going into the final quarter.

Tumwater, which dropped to 3-9 overall, stayed close but never took the lead in the fourth quarter. Brenda Morris led Tumwater with nine points.

THOMPSON'S 41 STOPS RAMS

North Thurston didn't have an answer for 6-foot Bri Thompson, whose 41 points keyed Chehalis' 65-56 victory.

The Rams led 19-17 at halftime, but Thompson scored 15 in the third quarter when the Bearcats outscored North Thurston 21-9 to put the game away.

Thompson scored 26 points in the second half.

"We couldn't stop her," Rams coach Dave Myers said. "She single-handedly beat us. She just turned and shot it."

North Thurston's 6-foot-3 Ebony Crowell had 13 blocked shots.
