OLYMPIA

Police department seeks volunteers

The Olympia Police Department is seeking volunteers for the Community Service Officer program. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, pass a background check and attend a two-day academy March 2 and 3.

These volunteers are trained to assist the police department directing traffic at special events, on the downtown holiday walking patrol and in community outreach and administrative support. Other activities include Harbor Patrol and the SpeedWatch Program.

Applications will be accepted until Feb. 11. Call Joy Lower at 360-753-8429 for information.

Presentation covers telemarketing scams

Learn about telemarketing scams in a presentation by a representative of the Washington state Attorney General's office, from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Olympia Senior Center, 222 Columbia St. N.W. The lecture is open to the public and will cover telemarketing, cancellation and privacy rights. To sign up to attend, call 360-586-6181.

Beekeeping workshop scheduled Feb. 11

A free workshop on beginning beekeeping is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 11 at Roosevelt Elementary School, 1417 San Francisco Ave. N.E.

The Olympia Beekeepers Association is hosting the workshop, which will include experts discussing bee biology and behavior, essential equipment needs, basic honey bee management and other topics. For more information, call 360-867-0816.

Children's variety show is benefit for preschool

A children's variety show and benefit for Eastside Cooperative Preschool will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Capitol Theater, 205 Fifth Ave. S.E. Tickets are $4 general admission; children younger than 2 get in free.

Pioneer descendants can get certificates

"Thurstoneers" certificates are being awarded to descendants of those who were residents in Thurston County by Dec. 31, 1852, or Dec. 31, 1902.

The Washington State Archives and the Olympia Genealogical Society will conduct a free workshop on completing the certificates from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Washington State Archives, 1129 Washington St. S.E., Olympia. Call 360-786-5222 to register. Another workshop will be offered March 9.

Social services boards will meet this month

Advisory boards for Thurston/Mason County Social Services are scheduled to meet at the following times and locations during February:

-Thurston County Partners for Children, Youth and Families, 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, ESD 113, 601 McPhee Road S.W., Olympia.

-Thurston Mason County Chemical Dependency, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Mason County Drug Abuse Prevention, 615 W. Alder, Shelton.

-Thurston/Mason RSN Mental Health, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 25, Thurston County Health Department, 412 Lilly Road N.E., Olympia. Call 360-786-5585.
