THURSTON COUNTY

School safety projects OK'd

Safety improvements near four North Thurston school district elementary schools have been approved by Thurston County commissioners.

Programmable flashing lights, warning motorists when schoolchildren are walking nearby, will be installed this summer at South Bay, Pleasant Glade, Evergreen Forest and Meadows schools.

The $100,000 project is paid for primarily with federal road funds, as well as $30,000 paid by the school district and $10,000 paid by the county.

SOUTH SOUND

Police on watch for child restraints

Law enforcement officers will strictly enforce state child restraint and seat belt laws this week as part of National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week.

Saturday, the Thurston County Sheriff's child passenger safety team will conduct free car seat safety checks.

The checks will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lacey Collision Center, 1215 Carpenter Road S.E.

MASON COUNTY

Rape reported; husband arrested

Mason County Sheriff's Department deputies on Sunday arrested a man in his Shelton home on suspicion of raping his wife.

According to a Sheriff's Department press release, the woman said she was recently estranged from her husband and returned to his home to retrieve personal property. While at the home, the man served the woman a coffee drink. The woman described the coffee as having a bitter taste and she began to feel disoriented, the press release said. The woman told police that, after she consumed half of the drink, the man handcuffed and raped her.

Mason County Sheriff's Department officials did not release the name of the suspect or the victim.

LACEY

City to receive MIA/POW flag

Lacey will receive an MIA/POW flag for its flag pavilion from the Lacey Sunrise Lions Club.

The club will present the flag to the city at 7 p.m. Thursday.
