Oakland outlasts M's

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Luis Lopez homered on the first pitch of the 10th inning to lift the Oakland Athletics to a 6-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Oakland's Mario Valdez hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to tie it at 5. Olmedo Saenz also had a home run and two RBIs for the Athletics.

Seattle's Desi Relaford was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs, and Mark McLemore went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

The Mariners broke a 3-all tie in the fourth inning when Kenny Kelly scored from third on a wild pitch by Larry Luebbers. Relaford drove in McLemore with a double later in the inning to give Seattle a two-run cushion.

In his first start for the Mariners, James Baldwin pitched two innings. He gave up two runs -- one earned -- on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Ryan Franklin, vying for the No. 5 spot in Seattle's rotation, threw two hitless innings, striking out one.

Athletics starter Mike Fyhrie struggled in the first, allowing three runs on five hits. Relaford, Jeff Cirillo and Carlos Guillen each drove in a run in the inning.

Miguel Tejada had a run-scoring single in the first for Oakland, and Randy Velarde added a run-scoring double in the second.

Saenz hit his first home run of the spring in the third.
