Smehlik scores go-ahead goal

PHILADELPHIA -- Buffalo defenseman Richard Smehlik scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period, and Martin Biron made 28 saves as the Sabres beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 Saturday.

Smehlik, returning to the lineup after missing 14 games with a shoulder injury, broke a 1-1 tie at 16:29 when his shot from the slot went into the net off the back of Philadelphia defenseman Chris Therien.

Miroslav Satan and Chris Gratton added a goal and an assist, and Jean-Pierre Dumont had three assists as the Sabres snapped a two-game losing streak. Ruslan Fedotenko scored for the Flyers.

HURRICANES 2, BRUINS 0

At Boston, Arturs Irbe got his third shutout this season, and Jeff O'Neill had a power-play goal as Carolina ended Boston's six-game winning streak.

The Hurricanes scored the winner at the 6:49 of the second period. Sami Kapanen fed O'Neill with a crossing pass, and he beat Byron Dafoe. Erik Cole added an empty-net goal with 46 seconds left.

Irbe made 21 saves. The closest Boston came to scoring was when Glen Murray hit the post in the second period.

DEVILS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 1

At Toronto, Martin Brodeur made 32 saves, and Bobby Holik had a goal and assist for New Jersey, which remained unbeaten against Toronto.

RED WINGS 4, THRASHERS 1

At Detroit, Brett Hull scored two goals and Igor Larionov added three assists for Detroit.

CANADIENS 2, PENGUINS 1, OT

At Montreal, Oleg Petrov scored 1:32 into overtime as Montreal kept pace with Washington in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

CAPITALS 4, ISLANDERS 2

At Washington, Colin Forbes broke a 1-1 tie on a fluke goal midway through the third period, and surging Washington extended its unbeaten streak against New York to 22 games.

SENATORS 3, LIGHTNING 1

At Ottawa, Marian Hossa scored the game-winner and set up Radek Bonk for the insurance goal as the Ottawa Senators defeated Tampa Bay to break a four-game home losing streak.

BLUES 4, PREDATORS 2

At Nashville, Tenn., Pavol Demitra and Scott Mellanby had a goal and an assist each for the St. Louis, which took control with three goals in the second period.

RANGERS 4, PANTHERS 2

At Sunrise, Fla., Eric Lindros scored two third-period goals, and Pavel Bure added a goal and two assists against his old team as New York defeated Florida.

COYOTES 5, AVALANCHE 3

At Phoenix, rookie Krystofer Kolanos scored the game-winner on a penalty shot 8:20 into the third period, enraging Patrick Roy so much that the Colorado goalie was ejected.

FLAMES 5, KINGS 3

At Calgary, Alberta, Jarome Iginla notched his 45th and 46th goals and added an assist for Calgary as Los Angeles remained winless in four games.
