Arizona puts Williams, Bell on DL

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHOENIX -- Jay Bell, the leading candidate to replace injured Matt Williams at third base for the Arizona Diamondbacks, will start the season on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his right calf muscle.

Bell was one of five players placed on the 15-day DL Saturday by Arizona.

"It was a no-brainer," manager Bob Brenly said. "He needs to let that thing heal up."

The others on the injured list are first baseman Greg Colbrunn, first baseman Erubiel Durazo and pitchers Todd Stottlemyre and Greg Swindell.

Williams and pitchers Matt Mantei and Armando Reynoso were placed on the 60-day DL.

Craig Counsell will shift from second to third for the season opener on Monday, with Junior Spivey starting at second.

- TWINS WANT PRIVACY: The Minnesota Twins want certain documents involving major league baseball kept from the public if the team is forced to turn them over to its landlord.

The Twins, in papers filed Friday with Judge Harry Seymour Crump, asked the court to issue an order to protect the documents from public disclosure.

A hearing on the issue is set for Friday. Crump will hold a separate hearing Thursday on a motion to dismiss the overall lawsuit, which team owners contend is moot because the Twins are playing this year.
