Warriors sweep Tenino

THE OLYMPIAN

ROCHESTER -- Donnie Driver pitched a five-inning two-hitter as Rochester swept a baseball doubleheader from rival Tenino on Saturday.

Driver walked only two batters and struck out six as the Warriors won 15-2.

In a sloppy nightcap that saw the teams combine for six errors, Rochester took a 10-3 decision.

"They battled," Rochester coach Larry Heinz said. "They have a young team, and they worked at it. They're well-coached.

"I thought we played well in the first game and were tentative in the second game. Their guy kept us off balance early in the second game."

The Warriors broke open a close opener with a 10-run third inning.

Kyle Hawes, Joel Deguise, Bob Starkey and Justin Wheeler combined for nine hits in 14 at-bats to lead the offense.

In the nightcap, D.J. Lucero had three hits and three RBIs to back the pitching of Deguise and Starkey, but the Warriors committed four errors on defense.

"We've got some things to tighten up and work on, and we'll get that done," Heinz said.

BEAVERS, WARRIORS SPLIT

Tenino rallied for four runs in the fourth inning to take over the early game of a doubleheader split with Rochester.

The Beavers won 6-3 in the opener and Rochester took the late game 3-1.

Tenino's offense came alive the second time through the lineup in Game 1 and the Beavers scored in the last three innings for the win.

Rochester opened Game 2 with a 2-0 lead and held on for the split.

RAINIER ROLLS

Rainier starter Beki Bergman picked up her third win on three strikeouts and no walks as the Mounties crushed Ilwaco 16-1 in three innings.

Val Larson led the Rainier offense with a 2-for-2 performance and an RBI.
