The Volunteer Center, sponsor of Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, salutes Tom Weiger as Volunteer of the Week.
Weiger was born and raised in Seattle. He joined the Navy in 1951 and later attended Washington State University's veterinarian school. He was a vet in Oak Harbor for seven years, in New Zealand for three years, and in the Seattle area for 21 years, before moving to Olympia in 1991.
Weiger has been an active volunteer with The Washington Center for the Performing Arts and Harlequin Productions. He has helped with concessions, taken tickets, acted as usher, raised funds, helped build a costume shop, and has been a board member for two years at Harlequin.
"Tom has an extraordinary eagerness and curiosity in people," said Scot Whitney of Harlequin Productions. "He just loves to help and is ready to pitch in when he's needed."
For six years, Weiger also has volunteered at the Saint Martin's Food and Wine Festival, which raises money for scholarship funds. He has planted trees and cleaned streams with Stream Team and worked on two county task forces.
"I enjoy the people I meet when volunteering, and I believe in the theater and what it does," said Weiger. "And it's fun!"
Weiger will receive a plaque from RSVP and KGY radio, courtesy of Deer Creek Awards.
